You’ve probably heard the saying, “If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.” There’s a lot of truth packed into those words. The things in life that really matter—like a happy marriage, a thriving career, or even tackling that home project you’ve been dreaming about—take real effort. Starting something feels exciting, but finishing? That’s where it matters, and let’s be honest, it’s not always a walk in the park.
Think about it: a strong marriage is beautiful, but it’s work. If it wasn’t, everyone would stay married forever. Building a career you love takes years of hustle and heart—otherwise, we’d all be living our dream jobs. And on a lighter note, haven’t we all kicked off a project—like a “honey-do” list or a DIY home upgrade—full of enthusiasm, only to hit a snag? Maybe the instructions got confusing, or you didn’t have the right tools, and suddenly, you’re tempted to call it quits. We’ve all been there. Starting is fun; finishing is the real challenge.
The Bible gives us a powerful example of sticking with it in Acts 20:22-24, where Paul shares his heart: “And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.”
Paul knew the road ahead wasn’t going to be easy—hardships were guaranteed—but he was all in. His determination to finish what God called him to do inspires us to ask: What’s our “race”? What are we committed to seeing through, even when it gets tough?
Here are a few ways to keep going when you’re tempted to give up:
1. Know Your Why: Paul was driven by a deep purpose—sharing God’s love. Whether it’s a home project or a big life goal, remind yourself why you started. That “why” will keep you grounded when things get tricky.
2. Expect a Few Bumps: Paul didn’t sugarcoat the challenges; he faced them head-on. Those tough moments in your project or goal? They’re part of the journey. That tricky paint job or overwhelming work deadline isn’t the end—it’s just a step and in the end… it’s a way we can honor God through our perseverance .
3. Picture the Finish Line: Paul kept his eyes on finishing the race. Imagine how great it’ll feel to complete your project—a beautifully redone room, a career win, or a stronger relationship. Let that vision pull you forward. But more importantly, seeing Jesus face to face and hearing him say, “well done, good and faithful servant!”
Next time you’re ready to toss in the towel, remember: starting is for dreamers, but finishing is for champions. Like Paul, let’s dig deep, keep our eyes on the prize, and finish strong. Because if it was easy, everyone would do it—but you’re not just anyone. If you’re in Christ… you’re a child of the one true King.. and here’s the great news… You don’t have this…. You don’t have what it takes.. but He does!!!
